Some of you may ask, "Why do we perform these Olympic Lifts?". It is a good question. The clean and jerk, and the snatch are the Olympic lifts. We do them because it takes a very large amount of strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy to get them right. They are rather easy when practiced with a pvc pipe or a light bar. However, when you start adding weight a whole new world opens up. That is when you really know if the lifts are not being done properly or efficiently. As soon as you work on one problem and take the weight up, other issues crop up, only to need more work. The cool thing about the Oly lifts is the inherent honesty in the whole situation. There is really only one way to get better, and that is hard work. Another cool thing is the attributes (strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy) spill over into many different areas of your life. You become more agile on your feet when faced with a sudden step off an unseen curb. You may drop something out of your hand and now possess the quickness to catch it before it falls to the ground. You feel stronger and more capable of leading an active life.
